The Greene County baseball team picked up a win last week, defeating Nevada 9-2. Seven base hits, five walks and three batters hit by pitches contributed to the effort. The Rams fell to #5 Winterset 7-4 and to Saydel 4-1.
GC is 2-8 on the season and is 1-5 in Heart of Iowa Conference action. The Rams were hosts to Roland-Story on Monday and travel to Jewell to play 7-3 South Hamilton Wednesday. Saturday the Rams are at Saydel for a baseball tournament.
Winterset 7 ~ Rams 4
Greene County fell to Class 3A, fifth-ranked Winterset 7-4 June 8 in Winterset. The Rams struck first with a run in the first inning. The Huskies countered with four in the bottom of the second. Both teams added a run in the fourth for a 5-2 tally. Winterset came back with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings while the Rams evened that out with two in the sixth, falling short as the Huskies won 7-4.
Coach Matt Paulsen thought his team played much better and saw a number of positives he hopes will carry over into the future.
The Rams collected seven hits to Winterset’s 13. Kole Teeples cracked a double to drive in a run. Max Riley and Justin Stream rapped two singles with Riley getting an RBI. Bryce Stalder had an RBI single and Alex Roberts poked a base hit. Joe Carey was credited with an RBI.
Peyton Kinsey started on the mound and took the pitching loss. He went 3-2/3 innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits, three walks and one hit batter. Cam Miller went 2-1/3 innings with four hits, two earned runs, three walks and one strikeout.
Rams 9 ~ Nevada 2
Greene County picked up their second win of the season with a 9-2 victory over Nevada June 9 in Jefferson. The Ram offense got things started in the second inning, scoring five runs. Nevada put two on the board in the third, but the Rams countered with two in the fourth to make the score 7-2. GC added two insurance runs in the sixth to win 9-2.
Bryce Stalder was the winning pitcher, allowing one earned run on six hits. He struck out nine batters while walking just one, and retired the last nine batters he faced.
Offensively, Greene County had seven hits, all singles, from seven different players. Braeden Roberts drove in two runs with his single, and Joe Carey and Justin Stream each had one RBI. The Rams struck out 10 times, walked five times, and were hit by pitches three times.
Saydel 4 ~ Rams 1
Saydel went up 2-0 in the second inning. Greene County got their only run in the third and the Eagles added two more runs in the fifth for the 4-1 victory.
The Rams managed just two hits, a double by Cameren Miller and single by Peyton Kinsey, off the Saydel pitching staff who fanned 10 Greene County batters.
Joe Carey was the losing pitcher. He faced 29 batters and allowed four runs, three earned, on four hits, walked six, hit one batter and struck out seven. The team committed three errors.
